cute new life for an old skirt

For some silly reason during my college years I left the beautiful California coast (Montecito to be exact) and transferred to a university out in the corn fields of Ohio (I know, beautiful in there own way). Since I ended up marrying that silly reason I guess it was all for the best. The school I went to was quite conservative with a no jeans dress code. So after college I was left with more than my fair share of long wool skirts.

Well now I am back in California to stay, though not in as glamorous a place as before (think the opposite of glamorous and you might guess where I live). I don't have much use for long skirts, so I decided to use one of them to make a new dress for Sophie. I used my Music Box pattern from Oliver+S. I really love this pattern! It is very easy to follow and works well with a shirt underneath which is really nice in the winter.
I probably could have worked a little harder to make the plaids line up, but since I was working with the skirt there wasn't that much extra fabric to play with. I tried to add some happy details to keep the dress from being too somber. Bright facing and pink thread for the buttons.

Sophie was an excellent model for me. Look at that sweet face!
But when she was done, she was done!

Do you have a re-purposed project that you are especially proud of? If so, tell me about it or put a link in your comment!

  12. This is beautiful.

I normally wear my clothes until they become rags, so I don't do much repurposing. But I am currently going through a big clear out of mine and my husband's clothes, so I think I will have to set some aside for repurposing.

I sometimes go to second hand stores and buy sheets to use as fabric for other projects. I guess that is repurposing, but I am buying it with that purpose in mind, not using what I already have, so not quite the same thing.
